Ethereum: ELI5: What’s the difference between a child-key and a hardened child-key in BIP32

A VPN is an essential component of IT security, whether you’re just starting a business or are already up and running. Most business interactions and transactions happen online and VPN

Here is an article that explains the concept of children for children in BIP32 in an easy-to-understand way, even for a 5-year-old:

What happens under the hood when we talk about Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets?

Imagine that you have a super secret box in which you keep your favorite toy. You want to share it with a friend, but you don’t want someone else to know what is inside.

In digital wallets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, there are special “keys” that help control access to the toy (wallet). But how does it work?

Let’s talk about two types of keys: children and reinforced children.

Child-Keys

Imagine -your friend wants to borrow the secret box. You say, “Okay, you can take a look inside, but only for a minute.” This is like giving them a children’s key.

A children’s key is a copy of the original key that does not have all the toy (wallet) information. Think about it as a simplified version of the toy. This children’s key is good for the loan of things from the owner, but not for the storage of real toys.

Kid-Kid-Kids

Now imagine that your friend is coming back and says, “Hey, I borrowed your secret box, but now I have to keep it safe!” You say, “Okay, here’s a strengthened key for children. This has all my toy information (wallet) included. ”

An reinforced key to children is like the original key itself! It is a special version that includes all toy (wallet) information. But, unlike an ordinary key to children, a strengthened key for children cannot be easily copied or shared with others.

Why are they different?

Think this way: If someone had a super long password to enter your secret box, a children’s key would only give them access for a minute. A children’s key would not protect the toy (wallet) itself.

But when you create a strengthened key for children, create a special key that can only be used with the toy (wallet). In this way, even if someone receives a copy of your reinforced key, he will not be able to access all the toys (wallets).

in bip32

The proposal to improve Bitcoin 32 (BIP32) is a set of rules for creating and managing digital wallets. In BIP32, the kilograms for children are generated on the basis of the parent key (the original key). The idea is that when you create a wallet, you can choose to use a children’s key or a strengthened key.

When you generate a children’s key, it’s like creating a simplified version of your toy (wallet). But if you want to store all your toys (wallets) safe, you need to use a strengthened key for children.

Therefore, to summarize: Kild-kilds are like simplified versions of the original key, while the strengthened keys are like the original key itself. Are designed to protect your digital assets from unauthorized access and sharing.
